National Public Health Week: Celebrating #PHNerds Everywhere!

April
15 2015

As some of us here at Worldways are self-proclaimed “public health nerds,” we were excited to celebrate National Public Health Week once again. This year’s theme was creating the healthiest nation in 2030. Public Health Nerd Alert: National Public Health Week 2015.

According to the National Public Health Week website, 2015 marked the 20th anniversary of American Public Health Association coordinating National Public Health Week. The accomplishments of the public health community over the last two decades are significant, and include a 25-year improvement in the average lifespan for Americans and a 70 percent reduction in HIV/AIDS-related deaths.

In addition to an interesting Tweet chat, there were many engaging offline forums about health equity.  Gail Christopher, vice president for policy and senior advisor at the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, noted to fellow public health workers that we must stand up for polices that are necessary for well-being, which extends far beyond the doctor’s office or traditional health care. This is a sentiment that also rings true to us as social marketers who address health disparities on a local, national and international level. Whether it’s working on beautifying our local city park or reducing the infant mortality rate in Delaware, we are committed to working towards achieving health equity in the U.S. and across the world.
