The New Wave in Art: Paleo Painting

When we say ‘paleo’ you probably think we are talking about the newest dieting trend. This time we aren’t. We are talking about the new painting trend pioneered by artist Marshall Carbee. Carbee’s Paleo Paintings only use natural paints and allow nature’s elements to paint for him.

As a former scenic artist, Carbee has seen and learned about the paint industry’s dirty secret firsthand. Carbee’s interest in sustainable paints was sparked when he began to witness his fellow scenic artists develop chronic illnesses from their exposure to the harmful chemicals found in paint. He began his quest for safer alternatives for artists by going backwards in time, to when mankind used caves as their canvases. Using soy-based products, free of chemicals,  Carbee began to harness nature as the force behind each painting.

“Now my goal is to touch the art as little as possible,” says Carbee of his unique work. “I use natural soy to prepare the canvas and then use the colors of the nearby environment to create paint. Then I leave the canvas outside, sometimes for months at a time, and let wind, rain, and the curve of the Earth itself ‘paint’ the ultimate piece.”

Carbee is currently seeking Kickstarter funding for a documentary about his creations. His hope is the documentary will inspire the next step, removing toxic paints from our schools, homes, and works of art.l is to touch the art as little as possible,” says Carbee of his unique work. “I use natural soy to prepare the canvas and then use the colors of the nearby environment to create paint. Then I leave the canvas outside, sometimes for months at a time, and let wind, rain, and the curve of the Earth itself ‘paint’ the ultimate piece.”

The documentary will feature the results, which are often stunning: like looking at the Grand Canyon or the Great Lakes in miniature, only filled with dozens of colors. We are excited about Carbee’s cause and hope that you’ll share our enthusiasm for this innovative artist by supporting him on Kickstarter.
