The Real Hunger Game

AA051069Let’s play a game; it’s called end world hunger!

As game developers, we always appreciate a good game to address social issues and in recent times we have been noticing games with social missions pop up all over the digital space. As advocates for social causes, it’s only natural that we tell you, our readers, about them so you, too, can bring about social change!

We learned about the game Free Rice.  The initiative was developed by the World Food Program with the goals of providing education to everyone and helping end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free. Free Rice combines the two goals perfectly.  The game tests your knowledge in a variety of topics and by answering correctly you donate rice for free to people around the world who may go without food otherwise.

Once you log into the website, you are prompted to answer a multiple choice question on English vocabulary. The default subject is English, but you can pick from a list of categories including, languages, SAT preparation, math and chemistry. There are also different levels of difficulty, for example here is a question from the multiplication table category “4×2=?” easy, right? How about this one: “what does German word ‘fremd’ mean in English.” Uh? The game was designed for all ages and capabilities and all questions are asked in multiple choice format.

For every right answer you donate 10 grains of rice to a hungry person that may otherwise go without food. The game is interactive, and you can see on the sidebars the amount of rice you have donated. The more you play and answer correctly the more you donate. The donations are made possible by World Food Program partners who make contributions on behalf of players.

World hunger is still a real issue today. According to the World Food Program, hunger kills more people around the world than malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS combined.  The opportunity that Free Rice gives us is incredible. We live in a highly connected world and Free Rice allows for us to make a difference in others’ lives without much change in ours. It allows us to make a difference by working with our current habits.

We want you to give the game a try, on your lunch break, in between classes or even when helping your kids with homework! We can’t think of any reason why you shouldn’t! If you know the answer to the German vocabulary question can you tell us? We’re stuck!
